Is Solar Power Worth It?

Minnesota officially became the first state in US to come up with a well devised system to calculate the value of solar power. The system does not only calculate the cost of the generated energy to the supply companies but also its value for the society and environment.

The trend of using solar power for commercial and home purposes is increasing day by day, more and more people are shifting towards this safer and cheaper alternative of the power generated by fossil fuels. Everything has its own value but unfortunately there was no system or methodology to calculate the value of solar but on Wednesday, Minnesota Public Utilities Commission came up with the system to determine the value of solar to the electricity grid, and the commission urged other states to move forward in their respective solar related policies.

Why is there a need to find the value of solar?
There are a lot of social and environmental factors to take into account when it comes to evaluating the cost of solar.

Clean Energy:
When a homeowner installs solar panels, they have an assurance that they are boosting clean energy with no risks and potential danger to the environment. When you use solar energy as an alternative to the energy generated by use of natural resources, you are doing your part in saving a little bit of natural resources.

Minimizing the Consumption:
Solar Energy plays an important part in minimizing the consumption load during the peak hours. Solar generates energy during peak hours, this the time when the utility companies have to bear the maximum load which results in high electricity rates. During the bright daylight, solar batteries store more than enough energy, which eases the pressure on utility to meet the electricity demand during peak hours.

Maintenance Factor:
More electricity load means more transmission, more transmission means more wear and tear of the supply lines. Solar energy does not require any transmission medium associated with utility supply, this factor will definitely minimize the maintenance cost for years to come.
The evaluation does not stop here, there is still a need to determine the value of the excessive solar energy that is sold back to the grid.

Why do we need to know?
The answer is simple, what is in it for you? Long term analysis shows that replacing the traditional electric supply with solar energy has monetary advantages. Lot of people are hard to convince unless you tell them the value of a specific thing, the evaluation method created by Minnesota is a major step moving in the right direction and convincing people to shift to this safer and better option.
