China is facing a problem that’s only
growing worse – smog covering its high-density population areas. People are
having trouble breathing and those affected by other respiratory ailments are
finding it hard to live near industry-packed locations. The government has
proclaimed war against pollution and in an effort to reduce harmful emissions
from industries operating near or even in cities; they’ve launched drones to
scout the area.
However, the story goes further than that.
Recently, evidence has surfaced that the Chinese government also uses certain
drones in an effort to reduce pollution with a more hands-on approach. By
dispersing certain chemicals in the air, the China Meteorological
Administration hopes to reduce smog and fog in cities within the country. The
chemical catalysts would neutralize harmful substances in the air and let the
Chinese people breathe fresh, clean air. Or will they?
The reports are rather new, so is the AVIC
(Aviation Industry Corp of China) and Chinese Government acknowledgment of this
technique. There are no studies backing up the potency of the chemicals
released in the air – those so-called ‘catalysts’, along with what their effect
would be on human health.
While the drones, say AVIC, can be used for
other purposes like agricultural seeding, rescue missions and even surveying
industries that don’t meet the pollution restriction standards, it’s too early
to say that their task to reduce pollution is a healthy, safe and even
functional one.
Only time will tell whether the drones will
manage to reduce pollution. And even if they do, more time will be needed to
determine the health impact on humans and other animals (pets, wildlife, etc.).
For now, around 100 hours of test flights have been carried by the unmanned
drones equipped with a gliding parachute.
